On Friday, October 24, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that it will send monitors to Passaic County, New Jersey. While election monitoring is not unusual, the League of Women Voters of New Jersey recognizes that this announcement has caused some unease, given the federal administration’s history of sowing distrust in our elections.
New Jersey voters can have confidence in our secure, free, and fair elections. For decades, the League of Women Voters of New Jersey has worked closely with nonpartisan partners to protect voting rights. Through these election protection efforts, the League and our partners have a well-coordinated system of trained nonpartisan poll monitors, attorneys, and multiple hotlines, all operating now and ready to respond to any concerns or issues that might arise.
The League remains in constant contact with our partners, the Attorney General’s office, the Division of Elections, and county election officials, and we are all working to ensure New Jersey voters can vote with confidence and without intimidation or interference.
In addition, as always, we encourage voters to vote early. The League of Women Voters of New Jersey was instrumental in expanding early voting options in our state, including in-person early voting and ballot drop boxes for mail-in ballots. Casting your ballot early reduces stress on the election system and strengthens our democracy by helping elections run more smoothly for everyone. The League of Women Voters staff is answering and monitoring two voting hotlines, 1-800-792-VOTE (8683) and 866-OUR-VOTE, throughout early voting and on Election Day. We encourage voters to call these nonpartisan hotlines if they encounter any issues at the polls or have questions about casting their ballot.
