In the early 1980s, two members of the HVLWV, Kate O'Neill and Rosemary Sinniger, were sitting in Kate's kitchen reading the names of graduating Seniors who would receive special awards at the High School Baccalaureate Ceremony. There were all kinds of awards - mostly for sports and for scholarship. There were no awards for several students who had devoted much time to the Hopewell Valley community for projects such as First Aid Squad, Fire Department, Scouts, Church, and Community Groups, but were not being honored for their service.
A plan was devised to develop a small honorarium for these young people. The awards would be made friom the HVLWV treasury, supported by donations from members of the community. After several years, Marge Loudon, a HVLWV member, became involved and the award was given in her name from a bequest to the League after her death. Initially two awards were given each year, one male and female, until it was decided that one larger grant would be more effective than two smaller awards.
